Dear Desperate Diary...

Send help.
So, I gave myself the ginormous, balance-crushing budget of a pound a day for food, for a week. The Ritz for dinner, it might not be.
*NTS: Cancel my table, Giles.
But all jokes aside, it means a lot to me... this little project.
It’s an important personal test of apathy with the hungry, strength of will, and an undeniable uncloaking of terrible food wasting/ indulgent lifestyle many of us (including myself) wallow in daily.
*Cue the violins and self-orchestrated choir.
But did you know, we throw so much food away it could feed the entire world’s hungry population? Wasting this food costs £470 a year for the average household. We even blogged about it with our Top Tips for Reducing Food waste.
So, it’s about time to rethink food waste and tackle these rumbling issues head-on.
While it’s a challenge for me, it’s a reality for many.
I want to see if I can do it.
Every day on this week long challenge I’ll be blogging, tweeting and begging for scraps on my nearest and dearests’ doorsteps. I must tell you all this right now; resist.
While I may have those puppy-dog-Anglo-Irish eyes all Bake-Off loving grannies can’t resist, rest assured: this puppy can bite.
I WILL eat you out of house and home... and house again. Be warned.
For a peanut butter cup binge eater...this will certainly be hard. But do this, I must.
Ready, steady...cook! (On a teeny, tiny, weenie budget)...

*Stomach rumble.

So that’s really it. Let My £1 a Day Challenge...COMMENCE!

Day One

Dear Desperate Diary,

Here goes nothing... Literally.

Even your milky white pages are reminding me of cake frosting, or Betty Crocker's table spread

…Is that a sponge cake I spy on the horizon?

No, it’s just a meringue.

Well, it’s Day One and all is going reasonably smoothly.

By 6pm, I was still in budget:

20p for a porridge breakfast, another 20p for second porridge breakfast 2 hours later, 25p for a fish fillet, 10p for a portion of frozen vegetables and 20p for the boiled potatoes. That’s 95p for the day. Not bad going, huh?

Truth be told, I found myself doing a lot of Math in the frozen section of the supermarket...and salivating in front bakery shop windows most of the time. *Apologises. I’ll bring window cleaner tomorrow, Greggs.

Stocking up my freezer and cupboards with one big shop, I even have left aside a little leg-room in my budget for fresh ingredients when needed.

Right now, it's 9:40pm and I’m craving something smothered in chocolate and/or marshmallows.

But all in all, I had a balanced and filling meal.

Let’s see if I can keep this up.

*HA!*

Chocolate fingers, and toes, crossed for me.

Ahh! Food Waste: Top 10 Tips to Save on Bin Bags (and the Planet)

ItDoesTheJob Stop Food Waste

#IsItJustMeOr...Just yesterday, I threw away 3 eggs, 2 loaves of bread and a tub of mouldy Greek yoghurt ... turning 50 shades of blue.

It got me thinking. How on EARTH can I be binning this much? I only went shopping a few days ago. What’s going on with my food waste?!

Sound familiar?
Every day we throw away enough food waste to feed over 1 billion hungry people, let alone £60 worth of perfectly useable food in our family home. That’s a staggering 112kg for each of us every single year in the UK.

It’s rubbish...literally.
So, we came up some simple solutions to help break even the most wasteful of habits.
With only a few small changes, we can make one HUGE difference to the amount of food we
chuck each year.
We’re looking at you, Grandpa Steve...
1. Revise your Shopping list
Start shopping smart. Get into a regular habit of checking your cupboards before you hit the food aisles. Ask yourself what you really need, and what can you already make from what you have in the kitchen? Write a list, (and stick to it!) For me, it’s always a big ‘no no’ to shop on an empty stomach. Be sensible, and give your food shop a second thought.
2. Leftovers...What, leftovers?
Use them up. Store them. Save them for another day. After all, isn’t that what freezers are for?
3. Plan, plan, plan!
Write down your meals for a week. Make a weekly noticeboard for your kitchen. Check to see what you have in the house, and then make a shopping list for any extras you might need.
You can save food, and have some pennies left over for the holiday pot, too!
4. Look after your fridge
Check the temperature of your fridge is looking its best. Perishable food should be stored at 37°C for maximum freshness and longevity. Keep your freezer at 0°C, or just a little lower, for the crème de le crème of food storage.

5. Serve your portions smaller
There’s no need to be stingy. But this is particularly useful to bear in mind when serving the younger members of the dinner table – often with eyes bigger than their tummies. After mealtime, if anyone’s hungry for more, they can go back for seconds. Then you can cool and store leftovers for another day. Save food, and on money.
6. Donate to the hungry
Got an extra can of beans floating around in the cupboard? There are SO many food banks, charities and church schemes that welcome donations with open arms. Some big supermarkets are now even taking in kitchen goodies for community food shares. Give it a gander, and you’ll be amazed.
7. Get clued up on expiration dates
Did you know expiration dates aren’t ALWAYS to do with food safety laws? Usually, they are just manufacturers’ suggestions of peak quality. So, store your food correctly, and most foods can stay fresh several days following the ‘useby’ date. If it looks, smells, and tastes ok, all should be fine. But remember to check all these elements are OK before serving up.
8. Start feeling sorry for ugly fruit
Not every potato is blessed with good looks. Every year, tonnes of fruit and veg are being tossed aside because of their shape, size and slightly peaky colour. And it’s all because they don’t quite live up to our beauty expectations. But for the majority of the time, they are perfectly fine to eat. So, the next time you hit the fruit market of superstore, choose carefully which pear you pick. You could save the life of a lemon.
9. Start your own lowcost living challenge
Ever wondered if you can survive a week on the breadline? Why not save on food waste, money and even your jean size for a week. Follow my £1 a day challenge for some inspiration. It’s going to be entertaining.
10. Compost those leftovers!
Happy International Composting Awareness Week!  Yes, it’s a thing!
Undoubtedly, you’re going to end up with some food waste.
Why not set up your own compost bin for those fruit and vegetable peelings? In just a few months, you’ll end up with rich and valuable fertilizer for your plants.
We love the HotBin..

Imagine a childhood without them. It's like jelly without ice cream, Narnia without snow, Harry without Hogwarts.

Might as well chuck me in Azkaban now.

#CheckDisOut: Latest Interview by Moi and Me for WE Magazine...

Meet Dee: #EmpoweringWomenInBusiness

Published on WE Magazine for Women on 7.05.15

Dee Wood,  ItDoesTheJob.com Ltd. The Eco Store that Saves you More.

Tell us about your business.
My business is a department store online for products that save energy, money and time. I provide practical products and ideas to help people reduce their energy consumption. Brimming with smart and adaptable solutions for business as well as home improvements, I’m there for anyone looking for clever ways to save money. Offering products to suit everyone and every lifestyle, I believe smart-shopping shouldn’t be marginalised to a selective audience. Sustainability can, and should be, in everyone’s lives. One of our aims is to slice through the mass of energy-reducing jargon out there, and offer products that are uncomplicated, simple to understand and above all, ‘do the job.’
Please tell us what being a business owner means to you and why you became an entrepreneur in the first place?
It doesn’t occur to me to work for someone else. It’s a completely different lifestyle, being your own boss. I think I’d actually be unemployable. (Laughs). I’ve never had a proper job. It’s funny. I love the responsibility and flexibility this lifestyle can offer me. But there is also a greater sense of doing something that really matters. Every day, I can utilise my skills and passion for sustainable living. I couldn’t do that with any other job.
There is a freedom that this allows you. But it’s a commitment; you’re with the business for better or for worse. Again, to feel like we are actually doing something. Going out there, making a difference and having an impact…it’s almost tangible. That’s really what I do it for.
What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why?
I’ve always grown up with this sustainable lifestyle. In a way, it’s funny to count it as an influence. I guess, what’s normal for you, and is your default setting, doesn’t really seem very innovative or inspiring. People often say, ‘why are doing sustainability?’ Well, we’ve always lived like this, ever since I was born. So, it doesn’t make sense not to.
My actual lifestyle and how I’ve grown up is the biggest influencer because that is exactly why I am doing what I am. I suppose, the fact that I want to make it easy and normal for everyone to be living on less energy and less money: that’s what’s driving me. Those thoughts wouldn’t be there without my background, the atmosphere and lifestyle I grew up in.
What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?
It was very exciting when our website was first launched about a year ago. Definitely, having something I’m pleased to show people, and say: ‘this is what I’m doing.’ It’s quite pleasing, when people take a look at it and say it looks slick and professional –  which is not how I think of myself! (Laughs)
It took a lot of work and effort to get it to the stage that it’s at. I mean, it’s all still developing, but that’s almost the beauty of it. And that’s a part we enjoy developing the most as a company, as well.
What’s the best advice you have received in business that you wish to pass on to our readers?
I think that it’s important to have perspective, particularly when you’re a smaller company, and you think you’ve made the wrong decision. Actually, you can always work the positives out of it and there’s no point bemoaning the decision you’ve made. That is some great advice I have put into practice.
‘Worst things happen at sea’ is one of my favourite quotations that I stand by. It’s all about working with what you’ve got, and keeping in mind that there will always be somebody worse off than you. You might think that your problems are bad, but you can actually turn it into an opportunity.
Something else I’ve picked up from people in business is the importance self-confidence. No one is going to believe in you and your idea if you don’t believe in it yourself. I mean, why should I trust you, if you don’t even trust yourself?  You do notice the difference between people who are generally comfortable in themselves, and those that are all for show and putting on a front. The confidence and trust in yourself is definitely something I’ve grown in and practised along the way.
What has been the most effective marketing initiatives or programs you have used to promote your business?
In terms of marketing initiatives, I go to a lot of local workshops and engage with the community. Because I’ve lived in this area my whole life, I know it completely.  I am able to go and approach a business upfront to help them. Even being an e-commerce website, it’s important to start in the local and go on from there. I would say our website is our biggest marketing tool for sure, in terms of having something to show: All the information on the products and our ‘About Us’ page is right there at your fingertips.
But being involved in the community remains a huge part. People like you having a physical base. It makes you feel more real as a company, and massively helps people to feel confident in us. It’s actually been helpful in a lot of ways, having this base. For example, people who come down to visit us from Manchester can say they have been to East London. I have noticed that its builds peoples’ trust and belief in us.
"Meet the WE Magazine for Women - Woman in Business, Dee Wood, ItDoesTheJob.com Ltd. The Eco Store that Saves you More"What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well over the years?
The little things always matter, especially in terms of looking after your customer service. When you make a poor effort on a rushed job, it always comes back to haunt you in the end. You always find yourself spending more effort, time and money doing it correctly the second time around.  Whereas, you could have spent an extra five minutes doing it right the first time. I believe in the importance of spending the first half an hour of the day, making a plan and organising your tasks. Realistic tasks should always be set. Instead of giving yourself five, you should have a list of 4 more achievable things that you can viably get done in your working hours. You’re really inefficient if you don’t have that.
Are there any resources or tools you’d like to share with other small business owners that have helped you run your business?
Becoming a paperless office and going electronic has had a big impact on the kind of resources and tools we use as a business. Being electronic allows for me to work successfully with others and from other spaces. We are London based, so the internet connection is also very good. I tend to use Evernote and Google Docs often for file sharing, which are both great. Or phone system is also all online, which means they can work over the internet. It’s possible work anywhere. I can take calls to and from the office, and from anywhere in the world which I have done.
By having access to your email from everywhere and using cloud computing, we can take all notes online that can be shared among colleagues. It makes you equally flexible as an office, as it does productive. You can all edit documents at the same time as being much more cost effective. Actually, when you store lots of paper you are paying for the rent. Going paperless brings down your fixed costs as you’re no longer paying for that space, such as what filing cabinets occupy. Being totally electronic brings all the costs down.
Do you have any new projects coming up? If so, please tell us about it.
Definitely building the foundations of the website has been a big milestone for us. We’re coming up to its first year now. Looking forward to the upcoming year, we’re excited to do a lot more marketing with the website now the foundations are set. It’s all about getting a whole load of new products on the website. We product test every single product physically ourselves on our own house, so that’s quite a big effort. And then it’s a case of doing all the write-ups and getting all the products we like on the website.
What do you do for fun/relaxation?
There’s so much going on in East London. I enjoy going out and socialising, getting involved in local events, new cafes, seeing art, and sampling real and local community ventures. In the summer, I hold events for the Leytonstone Arts Festival: www.leytonstoneartstrail.org.  Getting involved in my community is very important to me. Last year, I ran a pop-up cinema, and look forward to getting involved again this July. For relaxation, I love reading a lot of news, current affairs and satire in my free time.
What is Number One Business Goal you plan to accomplish over the next year?
I would like to have another Apprentice. It’s really important to give other people opportunities, I think. Expanding the business is another goal. In terms of e-commerce, it would be nice to grow and perhaps move premises.
You want to write a book on: Practical, clever and easy ways we can all be sustainable, reduce energy consumption and save money.
I would love to write an accessible book that everyone can just dip into for handy tips and advice, because that’s what I’m trying to do as a company.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
It’s super, super easy to save money and energy. Everyone always thinks it’s for other people, or it’s weird, or that it’s expensive. And it’s not. It is all about doing the little bits here and there. For example, if your lightbulb goes, just buy and LED light to replace that. That’s a small cost.
It’s about the little costs and the little savings here and there that add up. Don’t go around retro fitting everything: it’s so easy to be smart about it, and then you don’t notice the costs: you notice the savings. That’s what I’d say.

10 Reasons why we NEED a new L-Word

‘This is the way, it’s the way that we live… And lovvvvveee’
It’s 3am, and I’m still awake.
And, guess what? Bette and Tina are in couples’ therapy… Again.
Now, there’s a shocker.
*But, lets’ face it. With this episode-indicator, it could really be ANY season of The L Word I’m watching right now…
Although, one thing is for certain:
The only thing keeping me warm on this long, lonely night, is a subscription to Netflix and Kate Moenning’s face.
Well, that and a medium-sized pepperoni…currently scolding its brand name into my lap.
But tonight’s binge-fest has got me thinking… Really thinking…
Just what keeps The L Word popping back onto my laptop screen in the cold dead of night…like a baby reaches for its comfort blanket, or Bette Porter turns to verbal abuse?
I mean… going back in true Marty-McFly-style to early noughties, and the happy –go-lucky days of braless lesbians running around Hollywood, chilling at The Planet and oversharing on sexy escapades from the night before… what is there NOT to miss?
But now I’m calling for the new.
Brace yourselves, Lez Girls…It’s here: My 10 hearty and heartfelt reasons WHY we need a new L Word in our lives.
Because let’s face it, that theme tune’s getting a little annoying…
1) There are NOT ENOUGH lady-loving characters on the Telebox. Period.
Call me crazy, but I’m hungry-ing for a new drama that features REAL and RELATABLE lesbian and bi-characters for longer than 3 episodes.
I mean, not all Sappho-sisters need to be hit by a car, or fall off their bike before anything REALLY gets started.
Can anyone remember the last time we got a happy ending for realsies?
Who can forget the too-soon-demises of The Last Tango in Halifax and Call the Midwife…
It’s just not good enough.
Yes, I’m looking at you, Mr Head of the BBC Drama Department. *Shakes fist.
2) ALL the Guest Stars...*Sigh
Just imagine the possibilities… Alex Vause meets Carmen, who meets Ruby Rose…who meets Frankie from Lip Service… Cue melting of keyboard to a hot pool of plastic.
Kate Moennig3) Shane. Need I really say more?
We could really do with some more eye candy.
(Well, when can’t we?)
4) And THAT theme tune.
The L Word become like the backing music to our lives. But we now surely need a new soundtrack that makes us laugh so hard we need gas and air, and a show to cuddle up to with the girlfriend over a positively delectable array of chicken nuggets and Jaffa Cakes…
#DateNightsAtTheirFinest.
Yes, we’re calling for more girls in tight dresses who drag with moustaches. Goddammit.
5) The marmite lesbian we all love to hate. AKA Jenny Schecter.
We need someone besides Katie Hopkins to throw pillows/heavy objects at.
6) Okay, on second thoughts…maybe let’s miss out the-Jenny-Schecter-element. (I had a Jenny-related flashback). *Shudder.
7) A show to Come-Out with...
Hands up – who wouldn’t give due credit to the steamy-Sharmen-sexy scenes in their personal coming out story?
The show sure helped a lot of folks venture out of their queer bubble and realise their own sexual identities.
Heck, y’all know it’s true. #HeartSharmenForevZ

8) We all need a Lezzie Drama to laugh with/cry with
True story.
Frustrating as the plotlines can sometimes be, *Cue Kit Porter’s general onscreen presence, The L Word has always been there for us… like a bunch of loyal uber-hot friends, or peanut butter cups. They’re always there.
Oh, and not forgetting, their oh-so-relatable stories and characters.
What we NEED is a wacky and wonderful show to sob alongside in the dark hours of heartbreak, or laugh with before a long day at work. Dagnabbit.
It’s fair to say, The L Word makes us all feel far less alone.
We are reminded that there are others out there like us, and our lives can be something amazing, too.
That’s what it gave me.
9) The L Word meets 2015...
I hate to say it, but our beloved L Word is showing its age.
Long gone are the days of spikey-noughties hair-dos and flip-cell phones. Sadly.
Now we need a new L-Word to take us in, and remind us who we are TODAY.
A few wrinkles are a'showing.
I mean, who doesn’t wanna see a new L Word move into the here and now?
An Alice on Instagram…yes, please.
After all, it’s totally true: We’re pining after a show that ended six years ago.
10) That is why we need a NEW L Word to step up and take the biscuit.
C’mon writers, get writing! Preferably featuring characters with a steady pulse, this time...
